The first performance of Dvořák’s Requiem in the Czech lands took place on March 12, 1892, in Olomouc. The following day, it was performed in Kroměříž with the Žerotín Society, and on April 25, 1892, the work was heard for the first time in Prague at the National Theatre conducted by Adolf Čech. Dvořák set the entire Latin text of the Requiem Mass, which he divided into two parts. Throughout the composition runs a chromatic motif, heard at the beginning, with the most striking effect being the quartet “Recordare.” Critics wrote that Dvořák “can convince only those to whom art has given insight into the deepest recesses of the human soul.” Another reviewer, surprised by the restraint in Dvořák’s composition, noted that “in the Dies irae, which naturally urges towards dramatic intensification and lightly tempts theatrical effects… Dvořák carefully and wisely avoided this danger.” Dvořák’s Requiem lacks the pathos of Verdi’s Messa da Requiem; it’s not tragic, nor does it express horror of death. Farewell to the world is sad but reconciliatory, as the inevitable fulfillment of God’s will.
