The programming of the concert “Let Us Rejoice, Let’s Be Merry” will offer a separate program of Czech amateur choirs in the first part. In the second half of the concert, which will involve the Prague Philharmonic Choir and the Czech Philharmonic under the direction of Lukáš Vasilek, Dvořák’s Te Deum will be performed together, followed by the finale of Smetana’s The Bartered Bride.
The hymn of praise “Te Deum laudamus” (We praise thee, O God), known as the Ambrosian hymn from the 4th century, has been frequently set to music. It was often used for solemn secular events, and in 1892, it was chosen for the celebration of the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s discovery of America. Dvořák’s Te Deum, composed for this occasion, was performed on October 21, 1892, a week after the official conclusion of the celebrations at Carnegie Hall in New York. The composition is structured like a four-movement symphony and has been admired for its logical structure and thematic coherence.
The concert is part of the program of the Year of Czech Music.
